DESCRIPTION

HPE OneView 3.00.0X has a new In-Service migration feature. This feature allows migrating Virtual Connect Managed enclosures into OneView without powering off the servers. The migration requires redundant networking and storage paths as it re-configures each path sequentially. The complete set of requirements for the migration is documented in the "Transitioning a Virtual Connect configuration to HPE OneView" white paper, located at the following URL:

The migration pre-check compatibility report does not check for server Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) NAND corruption. If the iLO issue is not resolved before the In-service migration is started, iLO NAND writes may fail and subsequently cause the server to lose its profile and result in a server outage during the In-Service migration.


If this occurs, the Profile message will display as "The state of the server hardware in <Enclosure, Bay> is "Unmanaged, but needs to be Profile Applied in order to be operational":


In addition, under the Server Hardware page, the server that previously had a profile now displays as "none" after the migration:

 

 

SCOPE

Any HPE ProLiant Gen8-series or HPE ProLiant Gen9-series server running iLO 4 affected by NAND corruption.

RESOLUTION

If the server is already in an outage condition, the first step is to fix the iLO NAND corruption. Once the iLO NAND is fixed, reapply the profile. If the issue persists even after following the customer advisory listed below, or if reapplying the profile does not resolve the issue, contact HPE Technical Support for further assistance.

To resolve the iLO NAND corruption issue, refer the Customer advisory, "HPE Integrated Lights-Out 4 (iLO 4) - HPE Active Health System (AHS) Logs and HPE OneView Profiles May Be Unavailable with iLO Firmware Earlier Than 2.42 Causing iLO Self-Test Error 8192, Embedded Media Manager and Other Errors", located at the following URL:

A Corrupted iLO NAND drive may display different error messages based on type of corruption and different scenarios and its resolution is documented in the above Customer Advisory.


To prevent future outages, identify the servers that have an iLO NAND issue and resolve them. If not already migrated, continue to follow the steps below and resolve NAND issues prior to migration. The steps below will identify the servers with iLO NAND issue by exercising the NAND area of all servers in the enclosure.

1. Add the enclosure to be migrated into OneView in "Monitor" mode. This enclosure will later be removed from monitor mode. When the enclosure is added in "Monitor" mode the enclosure will continue to be managed by Virtual Connect Manager and there would be no service disruption because of this activity.

2. If there is an ILO NAND corruption OneView will be unable to add or remove servers from OneView "Monitored" mode and the operation will fail. Expanding the error will indicate a failure on a particular server or servers and will fail on following task "Add/Remove configuration from ILO."

3. Check the server ILO for errors based on the customer advisory listed above. After the servers with corrupted NAND have been identified, proceed to fix the NAND issue using the customer advisory listed above. After clearing all the ILO NAND errors, the add or remove operation should succeed.

4. If the remove operation fails because of a NAND issue, an option is to "Force" remove the enclosure regardless of the failure. However, do not migrate the enclosure without correcting the iLO NAND issue as it may cause an outage.

5. After all servers have been cleared of NAND issues, proceed to remove the enclosure from OneView "Monitored" mode and re-add the enclosure as "Add Enclosure and Migrate Virtual Connect Domain" to complete the migration as shown below:
